In the world of more sophisticated electronic dance music, where everyone remixes everything, there are DJ-producers and musicians who stand out from the crowd due to their personal style.
Among this category appear "Bugz in the attic," an English collective formed in 1997 and consisting of 9 members (including Seiji, Afronaught, Agent k, all coming from previous individual experiences in the field).
An experiment equivalent to that of Jazzanova, if you will. After many singles and the compilation of an episode of Fabric - also very interesting - here comes, in 2004, their first album on the self-managed label Bitasweet, distributed by V2.
It is a collection of remixes of tracks from soul artists (Amira, Macy Gray, Amy Winehouse), electro soul (Vikter Duplaix, Amp Fiddler, Nithin Sawhney), and the inevitable 4Hero (with the explosive "Hold it down") and Jazzanova. All the "manipulations" are done in breakbeat and house version with a sound that could be placed, especially in dancefloor pieces, halfway between Basement Jaxx (for their chaotic approach) and Jazzanova themselves.
The style of the nu-soul versions is very reminiscent of the wizard King Britt. Only 2 tracks are exclusively curated by Bugz, among them is the single "Booty-la-la," a dancefloor bomb already included in previous compilations.
The great merit of this crew remains their desire to experiment and entertain/have fun at the same time. Despite the unserious approach, behind every single production there is a meticulous work of sound research. The broken rhythm will make you tap your foot and nod your head even during home listening. In short, a breath of fresh air in a musical genre that often recreates itself endlessly.
