It’s 1974 and Budgie arrive to record their third album “In For The Kill.” An important album for their artistic evolution as it needed to reconfirm the good things seen in “Never Turn Your Back On A Friend” and so it was. This work is decidedly more energetic and fast-paced compared to its predecessor, the riffs are massive, there are also long instrumental solos and, like every good Hard Rock album, the ballad.

The album opens with the title track “In For The Kill” deeply marked by the terrifying bass scales of Bourge that, along with Philips' drumming, accompany Shelley’s unusual vocal timbre—strangely in this track harder, deeper, otherworldly, even in falsetto at one point, he delivers a stunning performance moving from moments of quiet and vocal clarity to others of total inspiration where it is his voice, not the sound, the melody, that catches the listener's attention. The song continues to its conclusion predominantly along the Bass/Drum combination. An extraordinary track in melodic composition and the vocal part. Song number 2 “Crash Course in Brain Surgery” if you expect a slowdown, you’re hugely mistaken, right away you’re swept away by a catchy and fast Riffing and, subsequently, by Shelley once again superb and extremely versatile, fantastic the final part introduced by an intriguing and dark bass solo, the piece ends on the high notes of the Welsh singer. Heavy Rock.

Track 3 "Wondering What Everyone Knows" is the inevitable ballad, slow and enchanting, lives in the voice-guitar combination. These are precisely the occasions where one can notice Shelley’s extraordinary vocal skills capable of angelic voices during ballads like this but, especially like "Everything in my Heart" from the previous album, and of intense performances in songs of a decidedly rougher sound. With the arrival of "Zoom Club" the decibels rise, the sound returns to being raw and fiery, even in this track there are falsetto high notes, however, the piece is predominantly instrumental with long Guitar and Bass solos. It’s the longest song of the album at 9.58 minutes. The initial part of "Hammer and Tongs" is truly evocative, almost total silence interrupted at times by dark bass sounds, to then be completely torn by the powerful drumbeats that officially start the track. Both in lyrics and melody we can notice more than in any other track a definite blues approach, particularly in the final part. Shortly after halfway through the piece, an unusual segment executed once more in silence can be appreciated, interrupted by background instrument rustlings but, what differentiates it from the opening part is the use of voice, clear, angelic, appearing to us as a lament, a last desperate and vain plea.

Continuing the ride, we reach the penultimate composition "Running from My Soul," characterized by a cadenced, compelling, and danceable rhythm, it presents itself to the listener as a '60s Rock and Roll piece culminating in the chorus but especially in the sound, that enters your veins and pushes you, transports you to dance. The seventh and last track "Living On Your Own" rapid and lively is a track almost entirely instrumental, traversed by the continuous performances, technically impeccable, of guitar, bass, and drums. Thus concludes a fabulous album in compositional, musical, and vocal aspects, fiery Hard Rock melodies, Hard 'n' Heavy, Blues, and a touch of Metal.

Tracklist Lyrics and Videos

01   In for the Kill (06:27)

Living ain't easy it opens your head
Layin' and prayin' you wish you were dead
When I was born I was given a will
That the meaning of life is
I'm in for the kill

Loving knowing giving showing
Love is seeing and ever being
Motor cruising midnight boozing
Altar singing and bells that are ringing

You got a reason to listen to me
For I am a messenger carrying the key
Money is nothing to hold into wills
And the meaning of life is
I'm in for the kill

You see me moving around playing on people's minds
But I won't be for nobody I only have a way of return
Take me make me do what you want
You ain't gonna mock up me
Well I am the tolls and I am the right
And I am the earth and the sea

Hey there you with a lock that is boozed
Gonna say it with a face that's red
It's only the ones who can take the pain
Who can take that golden hat
I'm only trying to help you love in a world
That is hot and rough
It's me and you and a cat named boo
And a woman who has run out of stuff

02   Crash Course in Brain Surgery (02:36)

Look inside and you will see
The words are cutting deep inside my brain
On they're burning quickly turning
Knife of words is driving me insane, insane
Yeah, yeah

Raven black is on my track
Please show me how to neutralise the knife
Show to me in surgery
The art of finding words to conquer life, or can try
Yeah, yeah

Ooh baby, I can rock and roll
Ooh baby, get out of my soul

Now the wicked lance I fear
Driven from my heavy mounted brain
Crash course in brain surgery
Stops the bloody knife of love again
Yeah, yeah, yeah

03   Wondering What Everyone Knows (02:53)

04   Zoom Club (09:53)

Come on everyone of you people
You ain`t got mud in your eyes
Tell everybody with hunger
Eat up the music tonight

Come on you`ll only get harder
I wanna get it to you
You are my life
You turn around in your zoot suit

Come on everyone of you preachers
You do the best that you can
Move on every one of you teachers
