As every year, the spotlight of the major labels seeks new characters, new faces, and new voices to be marketed through MTV and other media to make them "idolized" by teenage kids, much like the famous faces of Disney Channel, X-Factor, Amici, and so on...
This year it's Bruno Mars' turn, an American (specifically Hawaiian) singer and producer, who was already in the international music world as a producer and writer of singles such as: "Wavin' Flag" by K'naan or "Right Round" by Flo Rida. After the unexpected success of his EP "It's Better If You Don't Understand", it was time for him to make his mark on the world stage: "Doo-Wops & Hooligans" was chosen as the name that would bring Bruno Mars worldwide success, and so it was! Analyzing the name closely, it's clear that it wasn't chosen by chance, but has a precise meaning: "Doo-Wops" refers to the musical side, a genre inspired by the distant music of the '50s, while "Hooligans" suggests the second side, the more "Rock" one (Just to say, don't take it too seriously, eh!).
His first single release, let's talk about "Just The Way You Are", immediately climbed to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 multiple times, ranking first in many countries and continents: Ireland, Australia, England, Canada, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand. After the artist's sudden fame, the second single "Grenade" was quickly released, which also reached the Billboard Hot 100, earning 7 Grammy Award nominations and the (dubious) honor of producing a "Remix" with that tacky Lil Wayne. Another single released is "The Lazy Song", a catchy little tune but nothing worth noting, where in the video, a choir of monkeys with glasses whistles behind Mars, what a delightful thing! Finally (or hopefully) the last release daws upon us: "Marry You", like the previous ones: catchy, cheerful but nothing more, nothing less (except for the lack of monkeys!).
Moral of the story: a commercial album suitable for youngsters, the usual music that will sneak into your car radios, into your music programs (if you're MTV viewers or anything else) until you get irritated and have had enough. It must be said that in the world (alas!) there is much worse!
Amen.
