A few days ago, surprise and bewilderment characterized the visit of customers to the Wonder Bar. This is a historic meeting place in the cheerful town of Asbury Park, New Jersey. Those who have not yet sold the ancient English vocabulary, passed down from brother to brother for several generations, immediately draw conclusions: of course people were amazed in a bar with that name! It could be, however, the narrative has another path to follow. Anyway, and said ex abrupto, the story can be summarized in the simple fact that, completely unexpectedly, Bruce Springsteen held a concert in this place where, many years ago, he had played as a newcomer in search of fortune. Asbury Park is the birthplace of the great American songwriter. One of Bruce's first albums, just to highlight the affection and familiarity that the singer has always had for his land, was called Greetings from Asbury Park N.J.

That evening, on the stage of the Wonder Bar, Joe Grushecky and The Houserockers were performing, a band that Springsteen has crossed paths with in the past and with which he has collaborated. The Boss, with no hesitation, grabbed the Telecaster guitar and produced himself, accompanied by musicians also caught by surprise, in the splendid song Never Be Time Enough. This was followed by other tracks of the magnitude of Adam Raised a Cain, Atlantic City, Because the Night, Code of Silence. Unbelievable stuff.

It is the experience of many to observe and stumble into near desperate situations: the last ticket for the official concert of Bruce Springsteen has been purchased days before, what to do? Nothing, you give up. On this occasion, however, it was enough to take a stroll to the right bar and, along with the beer and the change, you spotted a guy singing that seems familiar. Maybe someone thought of a talented guy doing covers. Covers well done, but covers. But no, there he is, the singer with his worker-like air who has just finished his shift and shouts into the microphone his dissent against something or someone. Because there is always something and someone that’s not right. “It's really him!”, the lucky ones finally concluded. The small crowd of onlookers, caught between a sip of beer and doubt about the Boss, quickly expanded significantly. So much so that they crowded outside envying giraffes: a sequence of cervical cartilages of that magnitude would have been useful to take a peek inside the ‘wonder bar’. But, as those who are content teach, where sight cannot reach, hearing aids: the voice of Bruce passes and spreads down the street.

Anyone who wants to experience what those favored by fate in Asbury Park did can surf the web and search for a fragment of the show – the one where he sings Darkness On The Edge Of Town – on YouTube: it won’t be like having been in the land of Springsteen, but even though delayed, fun and enthusiasm are guaranteed.

These are the songs Springsteen performed for the occasion:

Never Be Enough Time

Adam Raised a Cain

Darkness on the Edge of Town

Racing in the Street

Chain Smoking

Save My Love

Frankie Fell in Love

Atlantic City

Pumpin' Iron

Code of Silence

Because the Night

The Promised Land
