Germany does not joke at all in occupying the Power Metal scene, and Avantasia, Blind Guardian, Demons & Wizards, Gamma Ray, Helloween, Rage are just some German bands that have made history in the genre.
In their own small way, even Brain Storm, although less known, have greatly contributed to perfecting this melodic current that, like a great trend, has particularly developed in the German state. It was 1990 when the band was formed for the first time, but it was only seven years later that their debut album "Hungry" was released, at first glance Acerbo and not very expressive. Years and various albums pass, until in 2005 they conceive "Liquid Monster", and then they begin to deserve a bit of success and proper attention.
Indeed, this "Liquid Monster" is a charged and powerful album, we do not have the typical and predictable medieval fantasy and epic melodic power, but a powerful concentration of Heavy Metal where the guitar riffs and engaging melodic bases form songs that are easily absorbed by the listener. It is essentially Powerful Heavy.
I saw Andy B. Franck live in Milan at RollingStones while singing with 'Symphorce' and supporting the 'Sonata Arctica'. Brain Storm is just like 'Symphorce', they do a Power that is not the same as all its peers, but it is hard and dark as it takes the classic rhythm of heavy metal and arranges it with noteworthy solos, remarkable guitar riffs, and a very well-done chorus. The keyboards are present but do nothing more than draw a light background. There are those who classify this album between Power and Thrash. Franck's voice is powerful, not shrill and castrated, but high, warm, and swaying.
The Pivot of the band is still Torsten Ihlenfeld for his great style of shooting sharp and straight riffs. The song "Inside the monster" is beautiful, melodic yet at the same time mean and aggressive, with complicated guitar solos and a rather pissed-off voice, the one that shouts "Inside the Monster". But also noteworthy is "Lifeline", which represents the fastest and thrash song of the German combo. "Despair To Drown" is also worth listening to, a song that recalls bands like 'Testament' and 'Megadeth'.
In short, if you want to abandon the choirboy Power for a moment to listen to hard and mean Power, try "Liquid Monster" by Brainstorm.
