I will try to review this latest work by Bon Jovi released about a month ago.
The widespread opinion is that the band with their latest albums hasn't produced anything worthwhile, repeating themselves without generating new ideas and becoming merely commercial puppets.
Personally, I don't own any old Bon Jovi albums except for the collection "Crossroad" (1994), while I do own the penultimate "Have a Nice Day" (2005), which, despite the criticisms I've heard, is an album I like a lot, more than the singles from the previous albums.
This "Lost Highway" instead I find a very anonymous album; even the first rather distracted listen left me with nothing, and subsequent listens added very little, mainly because the songs fail to capture my attention, they mostly drift by indistinctly. From what I have read, it’s an album recorded in the city of Nashville and should be born out of a country inspiration. This is certainly not new for Bon Jovi, but "Wanted dead or alive" or "Blaze of glory" were something else. You get some sense of that atmosphere, but the album doesn't have a real country identity, nor a Rock one, in short, it seems to lack an identity.
Analyzing the tracks is rather superfluous, apart from the first two, the others tend to be forgettable. The atmosphere is pleasant in "Seat Next To You", " One Step Closer" is enjoyable and well-executed, one of the best moments, and also "Any Other Day" is not bad, while the single "Make a Memory" seems to strive to evoke a certain pathos but doesn’t quite succeed.
The version I own also contains live versions of "Make a Memory" and "Lost Highway", which add absolutely nothing to an album that I feel recommended only to group enthusiasts who don't want to miss a piece of discography.
For others, an album to play in the background in the car radio, and forget about. Anyway, I like the cover.
