The Boards Of Canada are a world-renowned group acclaimed worldwide.
Brothers Michael Sandison and Marcus Eoin Sandison have been releasing music for many years. However, not everyone is aware of these three mysterious releases named respectively Old Tunes Vol.1 ('95), Old Tunes Vol.2 ('96), and A Few Old Tunes ('96).
This material was initially made private and released exclusively on cassette tape, rediscovered and officially recognized only after several years.
The rediscovery of this compilation of 30 tracks could even surprise the most ardent fan of the duo. These tracks, mostly recorded between 1991 and 1995, do not have many elements in common with the sound of well-known works such as Music Has The Right To The Children (1998) or Geogaddi (2002), though they remain mostly within the same musical current.
Certainly, there are classic Boards Of Canada moments, with voices taken from films, documentaries, or advertisements, but generally, in this album, the influence of artists like Aphex Twin is stronger. Nevertheless, it should be emphasized that the BOC had already taken the reins of that unique and indistinguishable sound that will characterize them for the rest of their career.
In essence, the album is a precious homage to 1980s Disco Music: ''Trapped'' (original by Colonel Abrams); ''Paul Russell's Piece'', in addition to perfectly blending the Ambient influences of those years: Spectrum; Forest Moon.
There are so many little gems within this album, extremely underrated and almost forgotten.
I therefore invite, anyone like me who loves the genre; whether a fan of the band or not, to give it a chance.
