Autopsy of a Dream is the brand new work by Blooding Mask, a project born in Italy in '92 and relocated to England for almost two decades now.
Maethelyiah is its founder and mastermind, but now the lineup is joined by the founding guitarist of the historical Danse Society, Paul Nash.
The eclectic duo offers 17 tracks that navigate through a multitude of genres in a Babel-like crossover with lyrics in different languages.
Prog rock, goth, death jazz, electronic, and apocalyptic pop are among the genres mentioned in the press release, but in common with the four previous albums, they have esoteric ritual moments and spectral choirs where Maethelyiah ranges with her vocal octaves.
17 tracks are many to describe, and I will later mention the pieces that overwhelmed me the most.
Once the light is turned on during the intro A Strange Introduction to Life (it’s really scary, and I strongly recommend not listening in the dark!), Autopsy of a Dream becomes a sequence of sonic unpredictability of incredible workmanship.
Paul Nash's inimitable guitars cradle the spectral The Beast from the Moors along with the historical guest on the occult bass, Diego Banchero (Il Segno del Comando), wrapped by Maethelyiah's ritual percussion and the keyboards of San Bollands, also a guest.
Another notable guest is Murray Robinson on sax in the death jazz track Drag You to Hell.
The arrangements are amazing, but the voice remains among the best of the last decades. Agnostici Numerici, Ishtar and Hastur, and Join Me present immense choirs.
The Speed of Love echoes 80s electronic atmospheres, unusually sweet.
Those who know Blooding Mask well will be enchanted by the evolution of this project in its 30-year history.
Personally, I can't wait to see them live again, but I will soon settle for interviewing them in England these days.
