LA RECENSIONE

Many of you undoubtedly remember the album This Was, which marked the debut of the excellent English band Jethro Tull. Well, the guitarist was Mick Abrahams, who this time, having left the group due to genre incompatibilities (the Tull move away from blues while Abrahams continues along this path), founded this interesting and extravagant group.

The Blodwyn Pig are formed by Mick Abrahams (vocals and guitar), Jack Lancaster (saxophone, violin, flute), Andy Pyle (bass), and Ron Berg (drums). The album opens with It's Only Love, a cheerful track with Lancaster and his saxophone taking center stage, followed by Abrahams on slide guitar and Pyle’s bass, which follows step by step in a slow but irresistible melody. The third track, in turn, brings us back to the style of the first, making a song like Sing a Song that I Know filled with cheerfulness and light-heartedness, and continues with the excellent The Modern Alchemist, which unleashes the necessary jazz to applaud the Abrahams-Lancaster duo (after all, Lancaster is a jazz lover). The rest of the record increasingly heads toward a masterpiece with Abrahams' Up and Coming, playing its blues, along with A Leave with Me and its extraordinary melody, passing through Change Song with its country flavor, and ending with See My Way, a small progressive gem. The closure with Ain’t Comin’ Home Baby ends the record, and we would gladly add ‘unfortunately.’ Definitely, Abrahams proceeds with his blues style and his band is perfect, seeking particular sounds (Change Song) while not forgetting the progressive (See My Way), and thus making the album versatile enough to delight us always with his guitar, much credit also goes to Lancaster and his saxophone.

A masterpiece that deserves more attention. Abrahams may have lost Jethro Tull, but his new band is certainly not inferior to the English group.
