The Profile

Blind Melon are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1990. They broke through with the hit No Rain and the albums Blind Melon (1992) and Soup (1995). Frontman Shannon Hoon died in 1995; a posthumous collection, Nico, followed in 1996. The band later reunited and released For My Friends in 2008.

Core lineup: Shannon Hoon (vocals), Rogers Stevens (guitar), Christopher Thorn (guitar), Brad Smith (bass), Glen Graham (drums). Hoon sang backing vocals on Guns N’ Roses’ Don’t Cry and The Garden. Major releases include Blind Melon (1992), Soup (1995), Nico (1996) and For My Friends (2008). The No Rain video became an MTV staple (“Bee Girl”). The band performed at Woodstock ’94. Hoon died on October 21, 1995, of a cocaine overdose.

Reviews highlight Blind Melon’s unique blend of melody, neo‑psychedelia and roots-rock beyond the grunge tag. Soup is praised as a dark, enduring high point and testament to Shannon Hoon. The self‑titled debut is celebrated for “No Rain” and heartfelt songwriting. The 2008 comeback For My Friends, with Travis Warren, is received as a respectful, spirited continuation.
