Battalions Of Fear is a splendid example of epic/speed metal from the '80s (1987). Blind Guardian, in this early period of their career, have not yet adopted the refined style that will emerge in their works following this initial phase, which also includes Follow The Blind.
The CD opens with "Majesty," a song that starts in a decidedly strange way and then flows into whirling guitar riffs that immediately make it clear who Blind Guardian are. "Guardian Of The Blind" is another fast and powerful song that deserves to be remembered. "Trial By The Archon" begins with exquisite guitar solos that will also characterize the rest of the song before merging towards the end into track 4 "Wizard's Crown." Moving on to "Run For The Night" and "The Martyr," both splendid songs, we reach "Battalions Of Fear," an excellent track that fully deserves to be the title track, fast and aggressive with outstanding vocal and instrumental performances by Hansi that actively engage the listener.
In "By The Gates Of Moria," an excellent instrumental song showcases the artistic skills of the four Teutonic musicians. The CD concludes with "Gandalf's Rebirth" (bonus track).
This CD is absolutely a must-have alongside the much more famous Imaginations From The Other Side.
The first album of the 'Bards of Krefeld' presents itself as a very raw and direct power metal, but with lyrics already permeated by the typical settings of epic narratives.
The album closes with 'Gandalf’s Rebirth', which shows the absence of the double pedal, making it a beautiful example of typical Teutonic metal.
