Yesterday I took an evening walk in the snow: icy sheet, and I fell a couple of times. All of this made me curse the snow and its consequences. But how can one say "oooohh, how lovely, it's snowing!" when you know it will cause 1000 accidents and maybe some fatalities?! Bah! In the inner pocket of the jacket, or rather, the coat :) I find the portable player with this disc inserted. As soon as I turn it on, the snow becomes whiter, softer, and the landscape turns into poetry, a Tim Burton landscape, scraping away all its irony (and scraping the bottom very well too). Result: Total Lobotomy.
The decadent spectral glacial gothic folk of this group founded by Sam Rosenthal (founder of the Project label, which this album is part of), presents fewer orchestral openings compared to previous ones, and makes more use of acoustic guitars and especially... the flute... aaahh that damned poignant flute that makes you feel as if you were dazed from crying too much.
Shall we talk about the voices, both male and female? From another time, ancestral. He seems like a bard belonging to the category of demigods, telling you about the epic sufferings of his world. She seems like a princess who died 800 years ago, pale complexion, robe used for her funeral, barefoot, singing while levitating 2 meters off the ground. You will have guessed how mystical and sacred this album is, with that monumental pessimism and those declarations of eternal love between people now deceased, who belong to different worlds and thus will never touch again ("knock three times on your coffin if you want my love"). Those cathedrals where once people suffered in such a way that we cannot imagine. An atmosphere that captures you with its charm but from which you wish to escape as soon as possible, given the darkness it imprints on your heart. Each time the CD ends, I tell myself: "I don't know if I will be able to listen to it again." This is gothic, my dear, not Evanescence.
P.S. I listened to this album repeatedly while reading "Perfume" by Suskind... Nothing could be more fitting.
Tracklist and Lyrics
07 Scarecrow (03:03)
I like it like that
The eyes looking up to me
Some so needy
Some so frightened
Maybe they should take it all
Take it all (take it all)
Steal it all
And leave my empty corpse propped up in the field
Halo Star
There you are
Halo Star
You walk away
Say it's all a game
Halo Star
