"I dreamed that I was HARD!"
In the wake of the Jungle Brothers and underrated Hip Hop, here come the Black Sheep.
On one hand, we have the so-called "intelligent" and political Hip Hop, and on the other, we find Hip Hop that doesn't take itself too seriously, satirical.
The Black Sheep undoubtedly fall into the latter category, but at the same time, they leave us with a doubt: were they goofing around or were they (halfway) serious?
The fact remains that they manage to make their debut colorful, comedic, and creative: always engaging rhythms and grooves (often Jazz Rap), smooth rapping, musical and of quality, they make you laugh even if you don't know English and don't understand a thing about the lyrics. You can't help but move your shoulders.
Irreverent attitude throughout almost the entire album: dark humor on the popular themes among the artists of the scene at the time. They are also recognized for their parody of Gangsta Rap, which made the legendary N.W.A. famous, excellently successful, searchable in tracks like "U Mean I'm Not", whose lyrics narrate the story of an individual who commits several murders against the family and the postman, although at the end of the song we discover he wakes up all sweaty with an erection.
Among other noteworthy tracks, there's "Strobelite Honey", which tells how deceptive a girl's look can be in clubs and discos. The great classics "The Choice Is Yours" and "Flavor Of The Month", always accompanied by funky sounds, which let us choose which Rap to follow, always playing on the Gangsta mentality.
Amusing is the right adjective.
