Rating: Consider yourselves warned, the new Black Lips album is entirely live and reeks of tequila. The band's introduction is entrusted to a crazy Mexican guy, then the audience's "oooooh" echoes like a penalty shootout in the final; it kicks off, and you can no longer figure out if it's the drunk crowd beneath the stage that's singing, who's sweating, who's dancing, and who's playing what exactly. Time has stopped at 1966, in line with the most authentic collections of garage-rock gems like "Back From the Grave," "Pebbles," "Hang Out to Dry" and similar. It's in the midst of that chaos that the Black Lips dwell, the modern reincarnation of crazy and obscure folks like the Swamp Rats.
"Los Valientes del Mundo Nuevo" should come with a parental advisory label reading: "we are freaking beasts on stage, this is the best we can do, and if you don't love garage, you don't know shit about music!". That is, 37 instantaneous minutes of bottles smashing on guitars, women screaming with ecstatic joy, Mexican trumpets, people seizing the microphone and moaning blowjobs, beer glasses 'clinking' repeatedly for yet another toast at the end of a track, and electrical cables losing contact with the monitor speaker signals. All of this is, in essence, the Black Lips.
At the end of "Stranger," you can hear someone boldly proclaim: "This is gonna be the best live record of all time!" Not even Jon Spencer ever went that far. Just for this mockery, "Los Valientes del Mundo Nuevo" rockets to the top of the most authentic garage records of all time.
