How to reinvent an unapproachable album like "Post"? How to reinvent its structure while maintaining madness, taste, and good music? Bjork attempted this with "Telegram" in 1996, an album that contains 9 new versions of those sublime tracks and a fun b-side.
No dancefloor music here, even though they are simple remixes; on the contrary, the little Icelander pushes experimentation to the maximum, between the alienating and disorienting techno of an LFO-remixed "Possibly Maybe" with a hypnotic rhythm, a "Hyperballad" stripped of its rhythmic element, replaced by breathtaking strings from the Brodsky Quartet, and an "Enjoy", practically ravaged and turned into a techno-hardcore instrumental bomb. Bjork (aided by many remixers) experiments with everything possible in a melting pot that perhaps doesn’t surpass the album of the previous year, but proves to be a rather captivating and beautiful reinvention: Bjork's remixes are not like those of most other artists, which are merely an excuse to make people dance; they are pure art.
Also noteworthy is the concluding rarefied and nocturnal version of "Headphones" by Mika Vainio and the cheerful b-side "My Spine", with bells, xylophones, and vocals with a chorus that sticks in your head. Bjork is always immense.
