Limiting the compositional genius of authors and musicians from the 80s to just new wave is a common and often repeated mistake. Therefore, in this review, I will not be talking about disco dance music or dark wave (which I love).
My goal, in fact, is to best present the album "Nebka" by B. Lew and S. Brown (already famous as a member of Tuxedomoon). Despite, from a certain point of view, already by the end of the 80s, there was a noticeable decline of the wave and a significant rise of Disco Music, 1988 holds a place of honor for this masterpiece, labeled under Crammed "Nebka" turns out to be the third project of Lew and Brown.
The multi-ethnic experimentalism is, from a certain point of view, thinned (referring to "Douzieme Journee" of 84, another production by these artists) "Nebka" is therefore a delightful gray and shadowy portrait, in the notes of "Tori, Près De La Soierie" it is possible to glimpse a distant desert slightly illuminated by that moon, soft and almost imperceptible, which will never leave us on our journey as perfect dreamers. The environments reproduced are, therefore, a clear derivation of Arab and Egyptian music ("Les Traces D'un Pon" "Qui Regarde"), technically we are not talking about dreamlike and imperceptible atmospheres, but rather excellent Environmental experiments that are never dispersive and minimalist never weighed down.
The journey continues with "Hommes Assis Devant Un Mur Chaulé" that offers a fresh and introspective stroll in an Arab square, where local jugglers show their skills, and merchants try to attract with their goods, but it is so easy to fall in love with such environments that sometimes we find ourselves lost in immense and rarefied woods ("Nebka" "Portrait Fidele") from which it is difficult to divert our gazes and attention.
An unmissable work, in which beauty is no longer an end in itself; the frescoes of deserts and squares are not New wave games, but pure idylls and art so simple that there's a fear of contaminating it with our judgments.
