We are in the late '90s and Stiller presents, during the VH1 Fashion Awards, a parody of the male fashion world. Unexpectedly, the character achieves tremendous success, and this consensus leads the actor in 2001 to make a film about Derek Zoolander.
Who is Derek Zoolander? He is a man really, really, ridiculously good-looking. He is the stereotype of the model who only looks at himself, who tries to approach his reflection in the mirror in bars, whose only goal is to always appear charming and fashionable, well-groomed and well-dressed. Someone who uses terms like coolio.
Derek is at the peak of his career when he is beaten by his arch-rival Hansel at the model of the year awards. This will lead him to a mid-life crisis, making him reflect on himself, want to leave the fashion world, and even think that "there is more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good-looking. I don't know what it is but I'm going to find it."
The center of the story is a global conspiracy by the fashion mafia, which, seeing that in the Far East the possibility of low-cost child labor is crumbling, decides to eliminate the Malaysian prime minister. The assassin will be a model who is really, really, ridiculously good-looking but also really, really, ridiculously stupid, who once on the runway, upon hearing the Frankie Goes to Hollywood song Relax, will awaken his evil assassin instincts and attempt to kill the Malaysian prime minister present in the audience; the task of recruiting the really, really stupid model will be assigned to Mugatu, a fashion designer who rose from nowhere and will be revealed to be the former keyboardist of Frankie Goes to Hollywood.
The story told in this way may seem absurd, stupid, not standing on its own... and indeed it is. But a series of brilliant ideas, model duels, impossible dialogues make Zoolander one of the best comedies of the first decade of this new century.
The cast is quite respectable; besides Ben Stiller, who is an actor/director/screenwriter, the cast includes a whole series of his friends or relatives: his father Jerry Stiller, little known here but an appreciated comedian in the USA; a whole bunch of Stiller's friends, many members of the famous Frat Pack: Owen Wilson (Hansel), Will Ferrell (Mugatu), Vince Vaughn (Derek's brother), Milla Jovovich (Katinka), Jon Voight (Zoolander's father). Then there are numerous actors and singers who play themselves, like Lenny Kravitz, Christian Slater, Fred Durst, and many others.
Enjoy and then we'll all see each other at The School for Kids Who Can't Read Good.
