1993: Ben Harper's debut album. Recorded in a convent, it is perhaps the artist's most authentic and genuine album. Right from the start of listening, it's clear that we are in the presence of a top-tier guitarist.
The opening track, "The Three of Us", is an instrumental where Ben's plucked strings resonate with magical notes, making it one of the best tracks on the album. The album is rich with blues songs in full black tradition, where Ben (divinely) plays a little-known instrument today: the Weissenborn guitar. Among these, "Mama's Got a Girlfriend Now" stands out, a blues with an infectious rhythm that humorously addresses the theme of homosexuality. But there are also ballads, acoustic guitar and voice, with an engaging sweetness: "Walk Away", "Forever", "Waiting On An Angel", "Pleasure and Pain". The album closes with the splendid words of Maya Angelou, about the sins of history and the pride of people who, overwhelmed by it, rise again. Words that the Californian bluesman sings, transforming them into the splendid and tear-jerking "I'll Rise."
"Welcome to the Cruel World" is undoubtedly one of the artist's most intense and reflective albums, a sensational start, even though public success was still quite modest here, Ben made up for it with subsequent albums.
