Real of 1993 is for Belinda Carlisle, the turning point album, but also a return to origins. Although it is probably her least successful record, for all fans it represents a little gem, characterized by the essentiality of the sounds, decidedly closer to the music of the Go-go's than to Belinda's work in her solo career.

Already the album's layout immediately appears much less glamorous than the previous Live Your Life Be Free. Completely white background, our artist dressed in an ordinary white shirt (so much so that she blends with the background itself), hair left blowing in the wind, and not a drop of makeup. The tracks are all built with guitar, bass, and drums, they don't present echoes and redundancies in the vocal part, appearing raw, and the classic choral blend, predominant in the refrains of cult songs like "Heaven Is A Place On Earth", "Leave A Light On", and "Summer Rain" gives way to counter-melodies created by the artist herself, author of most of the lyrics.
If the first single "Big Scary Animal" seems to strike a balance between opposing elements (in the sense that it's perhaps the closest of the whole album to her previous hits), already by the second, "Lay Down Your Arms", the change of direction becomes evident. The drums beat the times, breaking into the melody and giving body to the track that Belinda sings at the top of her lungs, almost as if to scream the need to reclaim the vehemence of her beginnings. Beautiful too is "Tell Me" with its dark atmosphere and "Here Comes My Baby" written with Gregg Alexander, who would become famous a decade later as the vocalist of the (one-man) project New Radicals.
Sweet "Too Much Water" which I've often imagined being sung by Bono of U2 (and I'm saying Bono... not just any fool).

In short, a definitely good album that far surpasses the barely sufficient previous album, and like anything somewhat daring, it garners appreciation over time and not immediately... indeed it's the only Belinda CD that hasn't achieved platinum status in the UK, remaining in the top ten at number 9 for just one week.

Hello, it's me.
The one who told you no,
I don't care if you don't like it,
But I had to let you know,
That love is at the door,
An its pounding to be let in,
There's angels on the ceiling,
My heart is on the floor,
And I can't be just your friend.

Here comes my baby, walking back to me.
Here comes my baby, for all the world to see,
Why don't you stay 'til tomorrow?
I don't wanna let you go,
Here comes my baby.

How long did I
Refuse to see the light?
How could I deny
It must have been my pride?
You say you're on your way,
Before you go I'll be there,
I've felt a resurrection,
All my senses have returned,
Oh, this I swear:
It won't be so long.

I tell myself,
Just be stronge,
I tell myself.

Here comes my baby, walking back to me,
Here comes my baby, for all the world to see.
Why don't you stay 'til tomorrow?
I don't wanna let you go,
Here comes my baby.
