Ever heard of a certain Norman Cook a.k.a. Fatboy Slim? You know "The Rockafeller Skank", come on.
Six years before the birth of his most famous incarnation, in 1990, good old Cook was part of this musical collective, or rather a confederation of musicians (the other important figure was the sweet lady Lindy Layton). Then several projects followed under other pseudonyms and projects, such as The Mighty Dub Katz, Freak Power, or Pizzaman. But how can you not love him?!
I was immediately drawn to all this also because of my passion for geography, for some obscure reason. Among the flags present you can spot China, Kenya, Saint Kitts & Nevis, Brazil... all countries with their own, very different, histories from various parts of the globe.
However, on the contrary, musically speaking, we are dealing with a special marriage between various sounds and genres, often related or somehow connected.
On this occasion, everyone would go to Kingston, Jamaica. We instead fly to Basseterre, Saint Kitts & Nevis.
White sandy beaches, a few deckchairs, fresh (nice) coconut, few people, and a sunset party. Total relaxation. You wouldn't refuse, would you?
How about a unique playlist with hints of Jackson 5, Fats Domino, Sly & The Family Stone, Billy Bragg, and Clash? Don't worry, our future Fatboy Slim takes care of that without any issues, creating an excellent, even slightly spicy cocktail.
Because good Norman is a barman with considerable skills when it comes to handling samples from various genres and this concoction of his invention is clear evidence of that; the product may not be the most original (and I think it probably wasn't even the main intent), but such works require a certain skill in manipulating such fleets of tracks. And "Endtroducing....." will teach, and in a big way.
How can I not point out the use of the bassline from "The Guns Of Brixton"? But I'll stop with the suggestions right away.
Everyone go listen to "Dub Be Good To Me" then! Dismiss the ranks.
