American hip hop group from New York City formed by Michael "Mike D" Diamond, Adam "MCA" Yauch and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz. Renowned for blending hip hop with rock, punk, funk and sampling, and for their instrumental experiments and eclectic production.

Paul's Boutique was produced with the Dust Brothers; the video for "Sabotage" was directed by Spike Jonze; Mix Master Mike was a longtime touring DJ with the group; Adam Yauch (MCA) died in 2012 and the group ceased activity thereafter.

DeBaser's reviews paint the Beastie Boys as genre-blending innovators, praised for landmark albums (Licensed To Ill, Paul's Boutique, Ill Communication) and their instrumental experiments. Reviews mix nostalgia, close listening notes and live-report enthusiasm. Opinions range from ecstatic to measured, but overall appreciative.

For:Fans of hip hop, crossover and 90s alternative music; readers of DeBaser looking for album and live-review perspectives.

The near absence of this work from the most frequented music sites on the web is yet another confirmation of the low level reached by the three in 2004.

I know nothing about the Beastie Boys; this is the first album I listen to, and it’s amazing.

“Ill comunication” is certainly one of the key works of the first half of the 90s, to understand those stylistic hybridizations that have often been labeled under the name of crossover.
