The Profile

Battles are an American experimental/math-rock group formed in New York City in 2002. Known for intricate loops, polyrhythms, and processed vocals, they debuted on Warp with Mirrored (2007), followed by Gloss Drop (2011), La Di Da Di (2015), and Juice B Crypts (2019).

Core members include Ian Williams (ex-Don Caballero, Storm & Stress) and John Stanier (ex-Helmet, Tomahawk); early lineup also featured Tyondai Braxton and David Konopka. Braxton departed in 2010; by 2019 the band operated as a duo (Williams/Stanier). Signature track: Atlas (from Mirrored). Label: Warp Records.

DeBaser’s reviews paint Battles as a math-rock/experimental powerhouse on Warp: precise yet playful, loop-driven and groove-heavy. Mirrored (with Tyondai Braxton) earns standout praise for “Atlas.” Gloss Drop is lauded for guest vocals and reinvention post-Braxton. La Di Da Di, fully instrumental, showcases the trio’s lockstep chemistry, even if some find it less visionary. Live notices highlight ferocious, tightly scripted performances.
