The Profile

Basement 5 were a British post-punk/reggae group formed in London in 1978. Fronted by Dennis Morris, they blended punk with reggae and dub, addressing unemployment, racism, and working-class life. They released 1965–1980 (1980, produced by Guy Stevens) and In Dub (1980, produced by Martin Hannett) on Island Records before disbanding in the early 1980s.

Formed in London (1978); albums on Island Records: 1965–1980 (Guy Stevens) and In Dub (Martin Hannett); politically charged lyrics; disbanded 1981.

London’s Basement 5 fused punk urgency with reggae and dub, tackling unemployment, racism, and working-class struggle. The review hypes the 1992 Island compilation ‘1965-1980 In Dub,’ folding in tracks from 1980’s ‘In Dub’ (produced by Martin Hannett) plus earlier material. Standouts include Riot, Immigration, Last White Christmas, and Union Games. Vocals by Dennis Morris and driving rhythm work power the hybrid sound.
