With “Have you Fed the Fish?” Badly Drawn Boy temporarily leaves his lo-fi roots for sunnier and more rhythmic terrains.
At the production helm, we find Tom Rothrock, as in “About a Boy” (soundtrack of the film of the same name), unlike the first album which lacked the presence of a producer. The sound is affected, the arrangements are more complex, and there is more room for brass, strings, and keyboards than in the previous “The Hour of Bewilderbeast.”
The result? Equally surprising, in my opinion.
Damon Gough, despite his shy and introverted nature, his slow and verbose way of speaking, manages to distill poetic pearls in the form of three-minute pop songs. All perfect, all romantic and dreamy.
Most considered this second album (third if you count the “About A Boy” soundtrack) slightly inferior to the debut. I believe that the two are simply different. Both beautiful in their own way.
If the debut favored the successful Damon/guitar duo, enhancing the author's writing, in this second stage of his career, the “badly drawn boy” prefers to give more space to the grandeur of the arrangements.
An album capable of igniting the slow-paced everyday life.
