The Profile

Badlands were an American hard/blues-rock band formed in 1988 by guitarist Jake E. Lee (ex-Ozzy Osbourne) with vocalist Ray Gillen, bassist Greg Chaisson, and drummer Eric Singer; Jeff Martin later handled drums. They released Badlands (1989) and Voodoo Highway (1991), with the posthumous Dusk appearing in 1999. Their sound fused Zeppelin-styled classic rock with blues grit and metallic edge.

Lineup ties include Black Sabbath/Ozzy alumni (Jake E. Lee, Eric Singer), and Jeff Martin on the second album. Reviews highlight Zeppelin and Sabbath influences, Gillen’s standout vocals, and note that the self-titled debut had been out of print for years. Ray Gillen died at age 34.

Reviews praise Badlands’ classic hard rock and blues-rock blend, spotlighting Jake E. Lee’s guitar and Ray Gillen’s soaring voice. The 1989 debut channels Zeppelin and touches of Sabbath; Voodoo Highway (1991) leans into raw, ‘70s-styled hard blues. Lineups note Eric Singer (debut) and Jeff Martin (Voodoo Highway), with Greg Chaisson on bass throughout. A posthumous third release, Dusk (1999), is acknowledged.
