I know it will seem like a snobbish bullshit. But the best concert I saw in 2006 was Bachi Da Pietra on September 2 in Dro, in the province of Trento. To counter the idea that it’s a snobbish bullshit, I will first admit my ignorance. I ended up seeing Bachi Da Pietra without even knowing who they were. I mean, I knew who Bruno Dorella is because if you follow Italian indie music, you just know. But nothing more.

I went to the Oltrasuoni Festival for three simple reasons: 1) with little money, the guys from the Associazione Sonà always organize interesting things in the middle of nowhere; 2) I knew a girl I liked was going; 3) my ex-drummer was playing there with his damn jazz improvisation project.

Oh, and there were also the Zu. I saw the Zu too, at the sports field in Dro. Good.

Then, around two in the morning, we moved a bit uphill where the forest begins. The guys had brought up a generator. My ex-drummer's trio played last, so I sat down to see these Bachi Da Pietra while waiting for the Buzzer Trio.

And I was dazzled, stunned, destroyed.

Who the hell are these two, playing sick music that not even Nicolino Caverna would play in 1981 during a withdrawal crisis? Who is this drummer who plays with only three pieces, the essentials, filling the night with missing stars and enchanting? Who is this guy who strokes or hammers the guitar and whispers despair with every murmur?
Simply blues, in its best nature, stripped to the bone. And played by two Italians. Namely, Bruno Dorella on drums and Giambeppe Succi, former Madrigali Magri, on vocals and guitar. What I witnessed was their last concert of 2006.

Now I see they have some dates around Italy (you can find them on their website) because they have released a new album. This review is just to tell you that if they come to your area, within a hundred kilometers, go see them at all costs. You won't regret it. Even if I’m a snob, I wish a band like this to be seen by a few thousand people instead of the twenty who were there in the grove at three in the morning. I wish they would go to Sanremo. I wish that on one of those shows, with the rankings of the best-selling albums in Italy, the announcer would be forced to say: "Once again Ligabue hasn’t managed to surpass Bachi Da Pietra, who remain first for the twelfth consecutive week." Even if maybe, people who sing: "Eyes half-closed I lie in the clover, I see a four-leaf clover that I won't pick," might prefer to do it in front of twenty people.
