Rating: Struck at the time, on the path between the record store and the office, by the double EP of the Battles, today I am surprised listening to these. Less cerebral, less "brilliant," less articulate, less definitive. All these little breaks and restarts, the crystal clear sounds, as if just polished. And well separated. Cold, you say? But I'm on the eighth track and it hasn't bored me yet, on the contrary. Nothing but the three of them, those dialogues between guitars and drums, with sudden shifts and abrupt scene changes but in a constant flow (should I add "almost seamlessly"? Sure, let's add it). And without force, nothing but the pleasure of unrolling the thread (often tense, a bit nervy, but never "hysterical") of a "discourse" that doesn't want to prove anything, just to follow it and discover where it leads. A game that seems to suffice in itself. And to them three. And also to me.
Like with the Battles, it was love at first listen (I haven't even finished listening to this record yet). But if I became an instant fan of the first ones and didn't worry about giving you a tip, with these three I warn you: it's a record from 2006 and if, like me, you've never heard of it until now, it's probably not as good as it seems to me. Yet, it made me want to write something (for a guitar record, no less) and there must be a reason. Who knows...
