THE REVIEW

We have already talked about the first chapter of Peel Session by Autechre, an EP, as previously mentioned, of good quality but definitely less inspired and innovative compared to what are now certain established standards.

Its sequel, released just a year later on Warp, is no better, so rough that the listeners of the popular BBC guru themselves suggested the titles, missing from the release and then accepted as such by Autechre themselves. Very successful and with a memorable melody as well as delicate is "Gelk", probably one of their most human creations, with a beat also more regular than usual and a closing that cites the drugged hip hop of "Envane"; the schizoids architectures of the gescom-like "Blifil" suffer from the same monotony and lack of attention to detail that had already characterized its predecessor, "Gaekwad" and "19 Headaches" finally explore more abstract and unconventional territories, the former showcasing more articulated rhythms and a synth work that feels like a cross between krautrock and old space-age, the latter forcing on dirty digitalism, the labyrinthine (non)melody and free form that were examples of certain moments of "EP7".

It is definitely the latter that stands as the pinnacle of an overall positive EP but which appears more like a training session, a bit sluggish as well.

Summary by Bot

The review critiques Autechre's Peel Session 2 as an uneven and somewhat rough EP that follows its predecessor's footsteps in experimentalism. 'Gelk' stands out as a memorable and more human track with a regular beat. Other tracks like 'Blifil' and '19 Headaches' explore abstract territories but suffer from monotony and lack of detail. Overall, it feels like a positive yet sluggish training session rather than a fully realized release.
