Born in Csikvánd (1935); emigrated to Switzerland after the 1956 Hungarian uprising; wrote in French; notable novels include Le grand cahier (1986), La preuve (1988), Le troisième mensonge (1991) and Hier (1995); died in Neuchâtel (2011).

Reviews emphasize Kristóf's austere, subtractive prose and recurring themes of exile, war, desensitization and solitude. The City of K. trilogy and Hier are highlighted as major works. Critics praise her controlled, hard-edged style and the moral bleakness of her narratives.

For:Readers of bleak, minimalist European fiction; those interested in exile literature and compact, severe prose.

They never play. They work, study. They do endurance exercises, discipline exercises.
