Sorry for My Accent is the recent EP by Cactus?, a very young trio from Vicenza that is easily comparable to the Anglo-Saxon indie scene.
The beauty, however, lies in the fact that at a certain point in listening, you can't wait to admit that reducing their sound to just an indie experience would be an unforgivable mistake.
It starts with I don't think it's good for you to stop smoking, the absolute precursor of the energy that permeates the being of Cactus?. There are many names in indie that this opening recalls (attracting even Domino Records itself), but from which it simultaneously differentiates itself, with timbres and sounds that are dirtier, oblique, and geared towards pure drive, skate, and casual road trips in the countryside to the next concert.
With Still Alone, a laboratory becomes more defined, still in its embryonic phase, of overlapping rhythms (see drum machine) and elements of electrical disturbance, creating an intriguing sonic puzzle.
The experimental phase finally becomes evident in the subsequent Brit Boy Surfs at the Disco and in the conclusion of Naban. Imagine manga inserts on acid and laid-back surf-rock. An ironic fusion plaything that surely offers many suggestions for the future, and a certain irony in the present.
Shove it only seems more traditionally rock at first glance, while Dunno, a lo-fi contaminated by hypnotic rhythms, echoes the length of Brit Boy, which doesn’t even reach two minutes.
It is with the closing of Naban that we find the most complete track on the record. While some elements may still recall Arctic Monkeys and company, its sonic vortices make the track much more personal and variable, with room for rhythm changes and imperfections.
This is the path that Cactus? can, in my opinion, pursue with wider breath and freedom of exploration.
At the end of the 16 minutes of Sorry for My Accent, it feels like traveling through colorful territories, driven by an acid, psychedelic lo-fi indie.
The thought, inevitably, is: I want more, and next time let it last longer!
