THE REVIEW

Albums of 2016, Now Almost Lost:

After their explosive self-titled debut, the Leeds group presents itself to the public with a sophomore effort that diverges from the guidelines of PIL and Joy Division without losing their post-punk 79 soul. The first thing that catches the ear is the repeated guitars, very clean walls of sound heavily influenced by Cocteau Twins, but perhaps more precisely from that incredible Just For A Day by Slowdive. The guitar is ultra-crystalline and can't help but remind one of The Smiths, the singer is a successful mix of Dave Gahan from Depeche Mode (Skipping could perfectly fit in the albums straddling the 80s and 90s of the Basildon band) and Robert Smith from The Cure; the latter along with Echo & The Bunnymen appear like ghosts within the album, between dark and psychedelia, shoegaze and jangle pop. A truly fresh and vital album, the Eagulls have slowed down and filled the frequencies, a dive into the '80s that will not disappoint you.
