The Profile

Atreyu are an American metalcore band formed in Orange County, California, in 1998. After breaking through with The Curse (2004) following their debut Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses (2002), they went on hiatus in 2011 and reformed in 2014. In 2020, original vocalist Alex Varkatzas departed and drummer Brandon Saller moved to lead vocals, steering the band toward a more alternative metal direction.

Name inspired by The NeverEnding Story; formed in Yorba Linda, California. Early releases on Victory Records, later Roadrunner, most recent under Spinefarm. Producers include GGGarth, Josh Abraham, and John Feldmann. Baptize features guests Jacoby Shaddix, Matt Heafy, and Travis Barker. Recent EP cycle (Seasons Of Life) led to the 2023 full-length The Beautiful Dark Of Life.

DeBaser’s reviews frame Atreyu as early-2000s metalcore torchbearers who later embraced hook-heavy alternative metal. The Curse is hailed as a peak, while Baptize and recent EPs chart a slick, collaborative direction after Alex Varkatzas’s exit and Brandon Saller’s move to lead vocals. Production line-ups (GGGarth, Josh Abraham, John Feldmann) and big-name guests color the discourse. Overall verdict: evolving, divisive, still compelling.
