Atiq Rahimi (born 1962 in Kabul) is an Afghan-born French author and filmmaker, best known for the novel Syngué Sabour (published in translations as The Patience Stone / Pietra di pazienza), which won major literary recognition.

Rahimi won the Prix Goncourt in 2008 for Syngué Sabour (The Patience Stone). He adapted and directed a film version of The Patience Stone.

The available review highlights Atiq Rahimi's novel Pietra di pazienza as a powerful single-voice narrative giving expression to an Afghan woman's private torment. Themes include suffering, humiliation, prayer turned confession, and a tragic conclusion. The book is presented as a literary sensation and a focused examination of gendered violence.

For:Readers of literary fiction; those interested in Afghan culture and women's voices in contemporary literature.

We see them in the reports about Afghanistan that appear on our television screens, wrapped in their pastel burqas, moving often in groups of two or three with grace, and we can only imagine their features because nothing of them is visible to us.
