Born in Mar del Plata in 1921 and died in Buenos Aires in 1992; bandoneon virtuoso and leading composer of nuevo tango; studied with Nadia Boulanger; led the Quinteto Nuevo Tango; created landmark works such as Libertango (1974), Adiós Nonino (1959), Oblivion, Histoire du Tango, and the opera Maria de Buenos Aires (1968).

Reviews celebrate Piazzolla’s transformation of tango through chamber-like quintet interplay, classical nuance, and jazz tension. Highlights include the Lugano ’83 live set, the brooding drama of Tango: Zero Hour, chamber tributes in Histoire du Tango, and the elegiac pull of Adiós Nonino. Bandoneon leads, violin and piano converse, and the music favors deep listening over dance.
