Herbert von Karajan (1908–1989) was an Austrian conductor and principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic from 1955 to 1989. Renowned for his symphonic and operatic recordings with Deutsche Grammophon and EMI, he also served as director of the Vienna State Opera (1956–1964) and founded the Salzburg Easter Festival in 1967.
