Before sleeping, one U.S. after another: more or less one per track. More or less half a pack. Intense and contradictory sensations. Like the pleasure of slowly poisoning oneself. Like this listening experience. A sort of voluptas dolendi.

There's this warm voice, giving soul to hypnotic music.

It's the voice your best friend should have.

(The voice that guides the drunk to his bed. The voice that points the poet to the moon. The voice that gathers the fragments of the broken soul, so they aren't lost. The voice of someone who hasn't understood everything, but many things indeed.

The voice that could say anything.

The voice sings and whispers, and it warms your eyes, your back, your heart, your groin.

The voice says that destiny always leaves you the choice.)

There's this hypnotic music, in which the warm voice sinks.

It's the music on the moon.

(The music that freezes tears on the cheeks, so they don't fall to the earth. The music that preserves the memory of events, so it doesn't evaporate in the sun of time. The music that should play when there's no one listening.

The music plays, and it chills your fingers, ears, feet, the tip of your nose.

The music says that there are always and only two choices: the one you made, and the one you should have made.)

Note: Wikipedia teaches that "Elephant shoe" is the phrase used by Scottish teenagers to say "I love you".

[Finally, two debts: with Svevo's "Zeno's Conscience", because by now every cigarette is the U.S.; and with Roberts' "Shantaram", for a phrase shamelessly quoted above and a quintal of overdue sleep.]

Tracklist Lyrics and Videos

01   Cherubs (05:01)

I see cherubs swarm around the bed and swooping down to kiss your head.
Only when you're wrecked do you agree with all my plans for you and me.
The walls breathe, we're locked in tight - it's a lovely end to an ugly night.
I think I could burst but I'm sure it'll keep.
The strobe in my head keeps me from sleep.
