It's always "nice" to fill the gaps on the De-board. Sometimes the final product that materializes on the homepage can be unwelcome to many for various reasons, but the intention of adding new reviews is never reprehensible, if only we had more free time...

That being said, I will talk about a disc, not too interesting but pleasant to listen to as I found out: "Where are all the nice Girls?" released between '79 and '80 of the last century by the instruments of Any Trouble, then rookies.

This semi-unknown English band presents a little less than forty minutes of a cheerful and danceable mishmash where we find quite a bit of early-era Beatles and a lot, a lot of Elvis Costello... and why not a similarity with the Buggles (yes, those of "Video kills the radio stars"), noticeable because of the similarity between the two frontmen.

Precisely the appearance of Trouble's singer, Clive Gregson, (he looks like a nerd, a bit of a repressed sex maniac) makes the album title manifest as an obsessive theme of the songs.

The lyrics (nice but a bit predictable and immature) talk about dreamy travels, romances, and youthful loves, with a lot of exaltation of the female sex.

Most of the thirteen tracks have a short duration, fast rhythm, pronounced bass lines, driving drums, and some melodic guitar solos like Playing Bogart, "Get you off the hook", "Turning up the heat", the holiday-themed "Honolulu", and the flagship single "Second Choice" to name a few. From this pattern, the more reflective and liberating "Girls are always right" and "Foolish pride" differ only slightly, while "No idea" and "Nice girls" are slower and more poignant where Clive Gregson "can't take it anymore" and goes as far as saying "I'm sick and tired of all the nice girls".

In conclusion, one might say that listening to this album is as futile and enjoyable as watching an episode of "happy days", of which it would be a perfectly fitting soundtrack.

This album was the most successful one in the short career of this band to whom I want to say that one might be ignored anywhere, but not on the DeBaser board. Cheers.

Tracklist Lyrics and Videos

01   Yesterday's Love (02:48)

02   Second Choice (02:58)

You begin your education on a nursery school floor
Now you're a little older and you want some more
Everything you say and do is wasted on my ears
Soon it'll be too late for me turning back the years

Chorus:
A simple life is all I need
Two shots of fantasy and one of make-believe
I never tried too hard to make this succeed
You're the only one I need
I never felt the need to cry or rejoice
I never felt the need to raise my voice
I only wanted to be one of the boys
Now you made me second choice

Now look behind you, baby, well, he's doing it again
He is going to get you but he won't say when
Stop, look and listen when you open up your door
Or he'll be in there with you, you'll be lying on the floor
