The Profile

Anvil are a Canadian heavy metal band formed in 1978 in Toronto by Steve “Lips” Kudlow (vocals, guitar) and Robb Reiner (drums). Their early albums helped define speed metal, and their persistence through decades of lineup and industry shifts was spotlighted in the 2008 documentary Anvil! The Story of Anvil.

Founders: Steve “Lips” Kudlow and Robb Reiner. Key albums include Hard 'n' Heavy (1981), Metal on Metal (1982), and Forged in Fire (1983). Recognized as speed metal pioneers; active continuously and noted for a consistent, riff-driven sound.

Four DeBaser reviews chart Anvil’s straight-ahead heavy/speed metal from the 1981 debut to 2016’s Anvil Is Anvil. Critics praise the band’s consistency, Robb Reiner’s drumming, and roots in speed metal alongside Exciter. Highlights include Metal on Metal and live ferocity. Overall tone: affectionate and upbeat.
