Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860–1904) was a Russian playwright and short-story writer, author of major plays and numerous short stories that shaped modern drama and prose.

Chekhov's theatre blends comedy and drama and privileges ensemble writing over star roles. He clashed with the Moscow Art Theatre and Stanislavski over what he saw as over-typified portrayals. He died in 1904, the year The Cherry Orchard was first staged.

The available review reads The Cherry Orchard as a multilayered comedy-drama that resists simple sociological readings. It stresses Chekhov's ensemble approach, the coexistence of comedy and tragedy, and his criticism of over-typified direction. Chekhov (1860–1904) is a Russian playwright and short-story writer.
