Anouk
Update

Anouk, known to most for her now-famous "Nobody's Wife" which rose to the top of the charts in 1997, is perhaps an artist who deserves more attention than she gained with her first album and quickly lost thereafter (at least beyond the Dutch borders).
If in the first two albums, the musical arrangements and lyrics don't always fully convince, revealing a certain vocal and musical immaturity of Anouk, you need to listen to this album to savor the true character of this singer.

"Update", released in 2004, gathers a series of tracks selected from previous albums presented in an acoustic version and some unreleased songs recorded live. There are no distorted guitars and frantic rhythms to distract the ear from Anouk's warm voice.

From the very first track "Who Cares", you find yourself face to face with a powerful, embracing, and direct voice that leaves no room for any mediations. A single acoustic guitar accompanies all the anger, heart, and character that is sometimes sweet and sometimes bitter of an Anouk capable of scratching with her voice as in "Everything" and that absolutely does not make you miss the original versions of the songs.
The heart of this album is represented by "Searching" and "Stop Thinking" that in the acoustic version offer Anouk the opportunity to show off a vocal maturity capable of delivering true emotions and an intimate and warm "Margarita Chum" that concludes the acoustic part of this album, which alone could be worth the entire album.

The live-recorded tracks present in this album seem to be included more to fill the numbers (see a version of "Losing My Religion" by REM that hardly does justice to Anouk's ability) than to give real added value to an album that already with seven unplugged songs offers emotions.
It's worth mentioning "Between These Walls" where Anouk duets with Junkie XL.

Surely this is an album that allows a glimpse into the most intimate part of Anouk and does justice to her voice and her ability to interpret and move the listener.
