Talking about Animal Collective is not easy, not even when discussing an EP.
Avey Tare and company never cease to amaze us, releasing whatever they want on an annual basis. Considering their various collaborations, live performances, and so on, it seems they haven't stopped even for a moment.
"Water Curses" was released by Domino Records (USA) on May 6 2008, and contains four b-side tracks from the previous "Strawberry Jam".
It should be easier when talking about an EP; however, with these guys, it's not so. If one wanted to understand why such high-caliber tracks were excluded from the already fantastic "Strawberry Jam," things would be simpler.
Listening to the first track, which takes its name from the album, it is immediately clear that the intent was to release something else from the "Strawberry Jam" sessions separately to distinguish the new work from previous ones.
The new philosophy settles in with this EP. The transition from FatCat to Domino is noticeable, less chaos and more catchiness, finally distancing themselves from similarities with the Liars. The experiments are pure, like water, and they dominate. The same new atmosphere of the previous work is present, an excellent project capable of leaving us ecstatic with every listen.
