Die Javier, you ugly bastard!
Have you ever tried to fight someone bigger than you? Okay, probably ¾ of the world population is bigger than me, but whatever, you have about 30 seconds of adrenaline at your disposal and a good dose of alcohol in your body to give you courage, but if you don't land the first strike in the right place at the right time, then you're done, buddy. The first strike Angkor Wat, a Texan quintet, delivered it for sure, in April of 1989 (30 years ago!), and the hit landed, right in the face. A little over 38 minutes of adrenaline and who knows how many alcoholic drinks consumed, to give birth to 11 tracks without a moment's pause, well, actually there is a moment, listen to "Warsaw" to believe it, but damn can you give poor Brinkman a moment to go take a piss? With all the beers he had before…
Anyway, that ugly bouncer with a face like Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men shouldn’t have thrown me out of the club. It wasn't my fault the beer mug slipped right onto the (dick)head of the guy in front of me, was it? Francis Begbie can do it and I can’t? And there it is "Innocence 89", I see it right at that moment, tears, silences broken by piercing screams and a sense of looming threat, indeed here’s Javier grabbing me like a dirty sock left on the bathroom floor of the club for two months “kindly escorting” me to the door. I think 'I'm done' (in both senses) so I might as well play the card of the angry, indignant, pissed-off idiot. Nada. I lunge at that beast with the blank stare, he doesn’t even get pissed, but I want to have at least one last drink and then screw everyone. Blind rage, screams, grim despair, Angkor doesn’t give up an inch…I do. Adrenaline depleted, the attack on the beast exhausted me, like this masterpiece which, when you think you've caught it by the neck, knocks you down with "Circus of Horrors/Civilized."
I head back to the car, where the hell are my keys?! I must have lost them while Javier was giving me a free physiotherapy session. What do I do? Start over? Yeah …track 1…. "Innocence 89… “Javier, you ugly bastard, my keys!!!.....”
The following year Angkor Wat would do it again with Corpus Christi, perhaps with more industrial sounds and less Thrash/Hardcore/Grindcore, eventually becoming, in fact, the Skrew, but that's another story folks.
Cheers
