"Tenderness can be just as abstract as insanity" David Lynch
Many, when faced with The Straight Story, thought that Lynch had changed his style, but they evidently didn't know Lynch well. The elements that make the films of this great American filmmaker special and different are all there: dreams, visions, poetry, roads, dialogues, demons, paranoia, black humor, love, the aesthetic sense of pure beauty, and music. Music or the soundtrack is an essential part of Lynch's cinematic art, who, since his first masterpiece, has sought to compile soundtracks of excellent quality. The real turning point came with the meeting with Angelo Badalamenti (Blue Velvet), and from that moment began a collaboration that would write unforgettable pages of great music, just like that of The Straight Story.
Personally, I am a fan of soundtracks, but I must admit that I have rarely been moved and touched and drift into the center of my visions as I do when faced with these thirteen tracks. We are talking about instrumental music, inspired by folk and country traditions, guitar, violin, double bass, and orchestrations that make everything harmonious. Harmony is the key word, just like the film; the music flows slowly but inexorably, aiming straight at the heart, just like the lawnmower driven by Alvin, and during the journey, we can be lulled by the wind, see the changing colors of the seasons, the sound of rain, hear the voices of shadows, be flooded by the brightness of dawn, sink into love at sunset, and then harmony and one more thing...the stars!
