LA RECENSIONE

The average listener, when it comes to guitar-oriented instrumental albums, generally shows a certain feeling of mistrust: due to the influence of certain prominent figures in the scene during the '80s (no names!), there is a widespread belief that such works are synonymous with flashy displays on the instrument, musical scales played at insane bpms without rhyme or reason, flashy tricks with the tremolo arm, and so on.

Nothing could be further from the truth: the electric guitar, once freed from preconceptions and flashy guitar hero stereotypes, reveals itself as an instrument with great expressive capabilities and a very wide range of usage possibilities.

Andy Timmons knows this, and this has led him throughout his decades-long career to perfect not only his technique, but also everything that allows the guitarist to project his own emotional spectrum onto the instrument.

In 2006 Andy, under the name of "Andy Timmons Band" (a power trio composed naturally of himself, Mike Daane on bass, and Mitch Marine on drums), released "Resolution".

The album consists of 11 exclusively instrumental tracks, where a substantial lead guitar takes center stage creating atmospheres with a high emotional rate.

It goes without saying that in adrenaline-pumping tracks like "Deliver Us" or "Beware Dark Days", we will have a real feast of granitic power chords, trills, full-on harmonics... in short, pure rock!

In the calmer and more reflective moments, above all in "Ghost of You" and the splendid title track, Mr. Timmons' great sensitivity is expressed through tear-inducing bendings, delicate phrases of a vague "Hendrixian" flavor, and a sea of tricks that make the performance on the "six strings" engaging and catchy.

There are also some forays outside the rock realm: there are very jazzy influences in "Gone", and furthermore, the album closes with the charming country track "Headed for The Ditch".

In this diverse "package," the personality, talent, and strong feeling of the American guitarist with his instrument shine through in every composition: Andy's touch is unmistakable, and the substantial technique never being an end in itself, but always in service of the song and the sentiment.

For this very reason, "Resolution" is a modernly conceived and exciting work that will delight guitarists, and enthusiasts, and perhaps (why not?) gain approval even among those not too familiar with virtuosic guitar playing.
