“Immensity”
“Our End”
“Mystery”
“Shells”
These are the names of the four little gems that make up the EP “Immensity,” a work released in 2020, three years after the album “Man, Woman,” which introduced him to the public as one of the most promising prospects in Italian music. Andrea Laszlo De Simone, a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Turin, is a name that may mean little to mainstream music lovers, and I say “thank goodness for that!” An artist far removed from the abyss of market logic into which the Italian music industry has sadly sunk, yet also distant from the current indie environment, where instead of independent artists, we witness a parade of post-romantic left-leaning depressed radical-chic individuals. According to him, he doesn’t even define himself as a musician or composer, as he can't read or write music, nor has he attended any courses or training schools; he is self-taught, an artist filled with passion and love for music.
If one wants to categorize his music into a musical genre, it might be placed under progressive pop. Close, very close, to Lucio Battisti and generally to the Italian music of the '60s and '70s (try listening to the song “Vivo,” released in 2021), with references to classic works, suites typical of progressive rock, and even a bit of the electronic rock of Radiohead. A unique, rare artist, capable of experimenting and blending multiple genres, yet always remaining anchored to the light Italian song.
The four tracks of “Immensity” are a summary of his poetic style, which can be listened to individually or as a single suite. Songs with a delicate, natural, ethereal sound, with a touch of melancholy that performs the miracle of pausing our hectic lives for a moment, with our thoughts, suddenly becoming light, soaring high, guided by the sweet melody and his voice. We are human beings; we are fragile beings, and listening to his songs makes us realize this once again.
"We are only shells
Scattered on the sand
Nothing can return
To when the sea was calm"
