The Profile

Andrea Camilleri (1925–2019) was an Italian author and screenwriter, creator of Commissario Salvo Montalbano. His novels, often set in Sicily and blending Italian with local dialect, made him one of Italy’s most read contemporary writers.

Born in Porto Empedocle, Sicily; creator of the fictional town Vigata; many books published by Sellerio Editore; the Montalbano series inspired the TV show Il commissario Montalbano.

Four reviews spotlight Camilleri’s range: a taut Montalbano case (Il metodo Catalanotti), the ingenious early novel Il Corso Delle Cose, and the demanding yet rewarding Dentro il labirinto. There’s also a lively Camilleri-style biography of Luigi Pirandello. Across them, readers praise the Sicilian setting, dialect-inflected voice, and sly humor.
