The Profile

Andre Matos (1971–2019) was a Brazilian singer, pianist, and composer best known as the vocalist for Viper, Angra, and Shaman, and for his solo career. A classically trained musician, he helped define power/progressive metal in Brazil and released solo albums including Time to Be Free, Mentalize, and The Turn of the Lights.

Brazilian power/prog metal singer and keyboardist; fronted Viper, Angra, and Shaman; solo albums include Time to Be Free (2007), Mentalize (2009), The Turn of the Lights (2012); active 1985–2019; died in 2019.

A sharp, skeptical take on Time to Be Free: strong voice but strained highs, predictable power-metal writing, and glossy production by Roy Z. The reviewer misses Angra’s folk/prog flair and points to Letting Go and Remember Why as the only real standouts. Overall verdict: easy on the ears, light on originality.
