The Profile

Anathallo is an American indie collective from Michigan (later Chicago) known for ornate, choral, multi-instrumental arrangements. Their name comes from Greek for “to renew/rebloom,” and they’re celebrated for the concept album Floating World (2006) and the lush Canopy Glow (2008).

Formed in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan; later based in Chicago. Around seven members during Floating World; prominent vocalist Matt Joynt. The name derives from Greek, meaning to renew or rebloom. Albums include Floating World (2006) and Canopy Glow (2008). Former member Andrew Dost later joined fun.

Two DeBaser reviews praise Anathallo’s intricate, orchestral indie pop. Floating World emerges as a Japanese-themed concept work with suites, bells, brass, and choral claps, led by Matt Joynt’s emotive voice. Canopy Glow is a peaceful, slowly revealing mosaic of chamber pop and folktronica. Both highlight rich arrangements and inner warmth.
