Who doesn't know the incredible musical talent of the amazing Amy Winehouse these days?
Impossible to criticize her, her music is synonymous with quality, her voice unique and moving, a character outside the norm, and so on... Everyone does nothing but praise this artist and in England, they even want to make a statue of her.
Intrigued by this phenomenon, I listened to her latest album "Back to Black" to get an idea. I remember seeing Amy Winehouse for the first time on MTV a few years ago (I might be wrong, but the song was Rehab, although in the video she wasn't skeletal and didn't yet have the extravagant hairstyle) and felt indifferent to that song as did the rest of the world. The following year, Amy reappeared in the second video clip from "Back to Black" with an extravagant look and physically transformed, the success is overwhelming: the artist wins award after award, ends up in all the newspapers due to alcohol and drug abuse, and sales go through the roof.
I've listened to the aforementioned album several times now but I can't find anything really striking to consider it a masterpiece. "Back to Black" consists of 11 tracks of simple pop that harks back to the fifties' sounds, especially the artist Billie Holiday concerning voice and some musical solutions. The only truly interesting song is the title track, with a captivating rhythm and a notable chorus, for the rest it seems like listening to a modern rendition of 50s pop, without having the class of the arrangements of that period. In my opinion, this is the weak point of the album, in fact, the arrangements are quite sparse and this hybrid between hip-hop and swing didn't appeal to me at all and greatly diminished the value of the songs.
I find her voice too excessive to the point of being ridiculous in some parts, and don't tell me she has a unique tone and is innovative. Artists like Amy Winehouse are a mirror of this society driven by appearances, and the success she obtained is normal, given the mentality of today's youth. As they say in these cases: all sizzle and no steak.
The songs are all predictable, devoid of any originality, heard at least a thousand times coming out of Arnold’s jukebox.
Perfect stuff for Radio Deejay at ten in the morning.
This girl born in ’83 relied on her talent and was right.
It is impossible to remain indifferent in front of a high-quality product like this, especially in an era where only the image matters.
