For the first time, I’m writing a review that isn’t three ice ages away from the previous one, that of “Zygoat,” to be clear. This is because I'm about to review a short, fierce, and cruel record, yet intense, definitely! I'm talking about "Lullabies of Silence" by Amok, a Swiss band active since 2001 with only one album to their credit, aside from the two EPs "Necrosapiens" and "Hephaistos," and they could easily earn the fame of the "Swiss Archspire" (yes, throughout the review, I will always say "Swiss" because "Helvetian" is disgusting to me), not for the similarity. Their style is really different from that of the Canadian band, but they are still comparable due to a common detail to both bands: the technique. Listening to Amok, you will inevitably compare them to Archspire: In "Lullabies of Silence" the songs are fast, short (one, Rynch, doesn't even exceed a minute), and the arrangements are burdened from start to finish with a "contortionism" of disgusting proportions. Drum sessions so intricate and elaborate that you won't even hear them in Jazz... and when a Metal drummer manages to "ridicule" Jazz in terms of technique... you’ve got to seriously ask yourself two questions! 10 tracks, 35 minutes of madness, pure fucking madness. You end up suffocated by impossible, twisted, and superfast riffs and phrases that scramble your brain, so much so that maybe the guitarist, bassist, and drummer (Philippe Suarez, Wladislas Marian, and Edward Hay, respectively) have much, much more than just two arms. I'll just tell you that in this record, they transition from Techno Death to Mathcore as if they were one and the same, and that's saying something! All of this under the screams of vocalist Ugo Rodriguez, who doesn’t sing, no... HE SCREAMS! He vomits screams full of hate in abundance, almost never stopping throughout the record. That man doesn't have two lungs in his chest, but the turbines of a fucking Eurofighter, I’m telling you! I truly recommend you find this record, this gem of cruelty and musical contortionism, which fans of the genre will surely not be disappointed with, trust me!
